The scent of blood filled the air and this time, Spike smiled because of it. This time it was the scent of Gordon Walker’s blood as it fell to the floor. Dru laughed, walking barefoot through it and gleefully leaving footprints on the floor. Sam and Dean were each holding their favorite knives as they stood next to Spike, looks of satisfaction on their faces.

“You see, boys, when you torture someone, you don’t want to make the cuts too deep. Otherwise, they’ll bleed out and the fun ends too soon,” Spike told them, gesturing towards Gordon. Dean nodded, a small smile on his face as he took in each tip that Spike gave them. Sam had a look of concentration on his face, one similar to the one he used to get when learning something new in a class.

“Shallow cuts. Got it,” Dean said. He smirked when Gordon glared and tried to speak through the gag. “What’s with the gag, anyway? We got attacked by freaking demons and no one noticed.”

“They were all at work. It’s the weekend so we can’t be too careful.”

“He screams and someone is bound to notice.” Sam raised an eyebrow. “And I’m betting he’d give up his pride just for the chance to be found.”

“Just get whoever showed up for him killed.” Spike smiled at the way Gordon’s eyes flashed. His eyes narrowed when Gordon looked at Dru. “I’d watch where my eyes went if I were you, mate. Dru can be a bit touchy about that sort of thing. And so can I.”

“Naughty little hunter. Mustn’t look without permission.” Dru reached out, slapping him. “It’s rude.” She turned to Spike. “He needs to be punished.”

“And he will be.” Spike turned so that he could watch each expression on Gordon’s face as he spoke. “Because there’s one other way to make this last. We’ll call it an emancipation of sorts.” He grinned when he saw the realization flicker over Gordon’s face. “Freeing the soul.”

“You’re going to turn him?” Sam asked.

“Because then he’ll be dead,” Dean said as he realized where Spike was going with this. “And then we won’t have to worry as much about what we do to him.”

“Exactly.” Spike nodded in satisfaction. “We can even add a few new things to do to him to the list.”

“Holy water,” Sam muttered.

Dru smiled. “The burns make pretty patterns. I think I’ll enjoy them very much.”

“Knew you would, pet.” Spike took a step forward. “How do feel about dying today, Gordon?” He tilted his head. “No answer? Well, that’s a shame. But I can tell you, you won’t enjoy it nearly as much as my boys here. Fledges never have as much fun, after all.” Spike’s smile wasn’t pleasant when it came and the scent of fear flooded his senses.

Dru reached out and placed a hand on Gordon’s forehead, pulling it back so that his neck was exposed. “Open up,” she whispered.

~*~*~

“Is he ever going to wake up?” Dean asked, tilting his chair back as he looked up at the ceiling. “I’m bored.”

Spike smirked. “Not much for patience, are you?”

“Understatement,” Sam said with a snort of amusement.

“Shut up, Sam.” Dean turned his head to glare at his brother.

“Now, now,” Dru interrupted. “No fighting or you’ll miss all the excitement.”

Dean shifted his weight so that all four chair legs were on the floor. “He’s going to wake up?” Dean turned to where Gordon’s body was slumped in a chair. “About time.”

“It hasn’t been that long when you consider everything.” Sam pulled his laptop towards him, flipping it open.

“Hasn’t been that long? Are you kidding me? It’s been two days!”

“Yeah, well, it’s not the most simple thing in the world, becoming a vampire,” Spike said, flicking a cigarette butt out the window. “The demon has to adjust to its new body, adjust to the soul’s memories and all that.”

Sam looked up. “I’ve been wondering about something, Spike. About becoming a vampire.”

Spike turned his attention to Sam. “Ask away.”

“The soul. Does it completely disappear?” He frowned. “Because if it did, wouldn’t we not really care about things we did before?”

“You’re wondering why it is you and Dean don’t want to kill each other. Why you still care as much as you did before.”

Sam nodded. “I mean, you and Dru talked about Angelus and Darla and he killed his family. Is it just the fact that you sired both Dean and I that keeps us from killing each other, that makes us feel like family?” At this, Dean’s attention turned from Gordon to Spike, all other thoughts forgotten as he waited for the answer.

“No. That bond the two of you have? That’s all yours from before.” He focused his eyes on Sam and Dean. “After I was turned, I tried to turn my mother. Wanted us to be a family for all eternity, the way we’d been in life.” He shook his head. “Didn’t take. I was still too young to be trying anything like that and to top it off, the demon that entered my mum’s body didn’t accept her memories and feelings of her life the way the both of yours did. Ended up having to stake her.” A look of sadness crossed Spike’s face for a moment before it disappeared. “So no, it’s not just your demons. You two are as much brothers now as you were in life.”

Dean relaxed at that and, after staring at Spike for another moment, turned back to Gordon. “So, what do you want to do to him first?”

Sam noticed the look of relief on Spike’s face and knew that he’d been hoping to avoid talking about what had happened to his mother. He knew that look, had seen it on Dean’s face millions of times, and he knew when to back off. He turned back to the laptop. “I say we see how Gordon likes Spike’s cigarettes.”

Dru laughed and clapped before walking up behind Spike and wrapping her arms around his shoulders, leaning down so that her mouth was against his ear. “How wonderful, my Spike. A party.”

Spike smirked. “And a fun one it’ll be, too.” He covered her hand with his. “I think Sam’s on to something with the cigarettes.” He glanced over at Sam and Dean. “How do you boys feel about showing me just how much you learned earlier once he wakes up?”

They didn’t have to answer. Dean’s look of excitement and Sam’s look of anticipation said it all.
