Note: Written for the challenge at [profile] spn_btvs. My prompt was: Buffy/Dean - lyric: "So much hate for the ones we love, tell me we both matter, don't we" - R
Now, this is my third time re-writing this sucker and I'm still not completely happy with it since I didn't really address the "hate for the ones we love" part but mostly focused on the second half of that lyric. But today is the deadline and until later tonight this is pretty much my only chance on the computer. So here it is. Here's hoping you enjoy and feedback is always welcome.

They’d met a few months ago in a cemetery. She’d been fighting a vampire and he’d been there to salt and burn some bones. He’d watched, eyebrows raised, as she easily took out the vampire and then turned towards him.

When she had started muttering about creepy grave robbers, Dean hadn’t been able to stop the smirk as he’d shaken his head and told that he wasn’t a grave robber but a hunter. Normally he wouldn’t have been so blunt but seeing her kill a vampire was enough of a reason to know that she knew about what was really out there.

That had led to them working together to get rid of the spirit and now here they were. While Dean would never have pictured himself traveling and working with someone named Buffy, he couldn’t deny that they worked well together.

Smirking, he pressed his mouth to Buffy’s neck. In more ways than one.

Buffy arched up into the touch, her eyes falling shut as she pressed up against him. She curled her leg around his and slid it up. He grinned against her skin and nudged her legs further apart.

“Oh God,” she gasped. Her hands went to his head as if to hold him in place. “Dean.”

“You want something?” he asked, barely lifting his head.

“Ass.” She smacked his shoulder.

He pulled back and stared down at her. “Well, if that’s really what you want...” He trailed off, his lips twitching when she narrowed her eyes at him.

“Just shut up and get back down here.”

And hell, who was he to argue with that?

The similarities of their situations weren’t lost on either of them. He hadn’t seen or spoken to his brother in months and she was down to only the occasional e-mail with her sister. And even then, Dean noticed that they were talking less and less.

He frowned as he thought of Sam. He knew that if Sam didn’t want to be found then it was more than likely that Dean wasn’t going to find him.

That didn’t stop him from trying though and he couldn’t be anything but grateful when Buffy gave him a look of complete understanding rather than questioning why he even bothered.

Buffy bit her lip as she looked out the window, watching as the scenery flew by. She knew why he followed any lead that he could when it came to his brother. There was a time when she wouldn’t have been able to imagine her life without Dawn there.

Of course, Dean’s brother had left to protect him and to find answers. She and Dawn were just drifting apart, no matter how hard they had tried to keep it together.

She held back a sigh. She hated feeling like this, feeling like she’d failed Dawn somehow. She hated the feeling of betrayal that came over her every time she thought of what had happened. And she really hated feeling that she was the one that was at fault here when logically she knew that they’d both been to blame.

Taking a deep breath, she turned to face the windshield again. Now wasn’t the time to start getting lost in the past. They had some zombies to go after.

“Dean, catch!” Buffy spun and tossed an axe in Dean’s direction, fighting not to laugh when she heard him swear and say something about how lucky she was that it had hit a zombie and not him. It just begged for a response. “If I wanted to hit you, believe me, you’d know.”

“Your aim isn’t that great, sweetheart.”

She frowned as she ducked and stuck a sword through a zombie’s chest. She made a face at the spatter of blood that caused. Damn it, she should’ve known she couldn’t go a whole week without getting some sort of blood on her jeans. And who the hell knew that zombies could bleed anyway? What was that all about? She shook her head and got back to the more important matter.

“My aim is just fine.”

“Tell that to that car in the last town.”

“It got in the way!”

“Sure, by existing.”

“Oh, shut up,” she called as she heard the sound of him firing a shotgun behind her.

“Don’t have a response to that one, huh?” Dean’s grin could actually be heard when he spoke.

She’d show him aim. Taking the time to glare at him briefly, she turned and pulled out a knife before she threw it, hitting a zombie in the forehead. She just barely restrained herself from saying So there. Judging by the look that Dean gave her, he knew it too.

It only took them another few minutes to take out the rest of the zombies and Buffy was just glad that this time a mask with super zombie powers wasn’t involved.

Neither one of them said anything as they made their way back to the Impala so that they could get back to the motel. They didn’t have to. The looks of satisfaction on their faces said it all.

It isn’t about sex this time. This time hands running over skin are about reassuring each other that they’re not alone anymore. This is comfort. It’s the only way they can tell one another that neither one is going anywhere because it’s an unspoken rule that they never say it out loud.

They rocked together, hands gripping hard enough that there’d be bruises there in the morning though neither of them cared. The bruises were just another form of assurance. Dean sucked in a breath when Buffy’s nails dug into his skin but still he didn’t say anything. Instead he sped up his movements, his hands moving to grip hers.

The change in pace cause Buffy to moan and tighten her legs around him. In the back of her mind she was aware that she was saying “Dean” and “please” but she wasn’t sure what she was asking for.

It wasn’t long before she tensed, crying out as she came. Even as she relaxed, Dean thrust a few more times, hands still gripping hers tightly, until he came with a groan. He collapsed on her as their breathing began to slow.

Closing her eyes, she sighed as he pulled away and moved to her side, pulling her against him. She wrapped an arm around his waist and let herself drift.

This was as close as they’d ever get to saying how much they needed each other and that was fine with her. She didn’t need to hear it. As long as they stuck together, everything would be okay.
