Willow looked down at the little boy in her arms and frowned before looking back up at Dean. “I’d love to tell you why Sam is suddenly a...mini-Sam. Unfortunately, I can’t. We weren’t attacked on the way home and I barely felt any magical signature while I was there.” She paused. “But I was pretty focused on getting him back here.”

Dean let out a breath. “Okay. Maybe there’s something back there still, something that we can use. Hell, maybe something’ll pop on the EMF.” He glanced over at Dawn. “Do you remember anything unusual?”

“Unusual for the Hellmouth, you mean?” She shook her head. “No. Actually, everything was pretty normal tonight.”

“Which isn’t saying much,” Buffy muttered. “Willow, do me a favor and start talking to any contacts you’ve got. Maybe one of them knows something about tonight or heard about it.” She frowned. “We could get lucky if some little demon or whatever is going around bragging about the fact that we’ve got one less hunter at the moment.”

Dean tensed at the words. Even knowing that they’d turn Sam back—they had to turn him back—and knowing that Buffy was right about them being short a hunter didn’t change the way he wanted to react.

Buffy put a hand on his arm and squeezed as if she knew what he was thinking. She nodded at him and he let out a breath. “Come on. The longer we stay here, the less chance we have of finding something.”

“Nothing.” Dean fought the urge to throw his EMF against the wall as they walked back into the house. He had no idea if Sam was awake or not but either way, he knew throwing things wouldn’t solve anything.

Willow smiled as he and Buffy walked into the room. “Good news,” she said. “I may have found someone who can help us out.”

“Who?”

“A local expert on the arcane. Lenny Havowitz.”

Dean blinked. “Lenny?”

She raised an eyebrow. “What were you expecting? A foreign guy with some complicated name?”

He lifted his shoulder in a half shrug. “A little bit,” he admitted. “Where’s Sam?”

Willow nodded towards the stairs. “We thought he’d be more comfortable in a bed so we moved him upstairs.”

“I’m going to check on him.” Dean didn’t wait for an answer as he left the room.

“He’s worried,” Buffy said, staring after him.

Willow sighed. “He’s not the only one.”

Buffy turned to look at her. “Are you sure this Lenny guy can help?”

She shook her head. “No. But right now, he’s the only option we’ve got.”

Dean stopped in the doorway, studying the way Sam hugged the pillow. His lips twitched. Even as a kid, Sam had always slept on his stomach with his arms wrapped around his pillow.

Shaking his head, he leaned back against the wall. “Not quite sure what to do here, Sammy,” he said, voice low. “We don’t know how this happened and so far we don’t know how to fix it.” He let out a breath. “Hell, we don’t even know if you’re going to have all your memories when you wake up.”

He stopped, frowning. That was something else that had him worried. Why hadn’t Sam woken up yet? Even though he’d been a fairly heavy sleeper as a kid, he’d also always woken up whenever they moved him from the bed to the car or vice versa.

Which meant that it was because of whatever had been done to him that he was still asleep. Dean turned and walked out of the room.

This Lenny guy better have some answers.

“You’re going to have to wait for me back here,” Willow told them as they neared the coffee shop where Willow was supposed to meet Lenny.

“What? Why?” Dean spun towards Willow, body tense.

“Because he agreed to meeting me and only me. No one else.”

“I don’t like the idea of you going in alone, Wills.” Buffy eyed the entrance. “Do you have something on you in case things go wrong?”

“Yes, though I really don’t think it’ll be necessary. There’s no reason not to trust him.” Off of Buffy’s raised eyebrow, Willow smiled. “What I brought with me is completely a ‘just in case’ type of thing. So relax and I’ll be back as soon as I know what Lenny knows.”

Buffy nodded. “Okay.” She tugged on Dean’s arm. “We’ll be back in thirty minutes.”

Before Dean could protest, Willow had nodded and gone inside. He frowned. “We should go in.”

“It wouldn’t help anything and you know it.”

He nodded. “Still, I don’t like it.” He rolled his shoulders. “I feel like I should be doing something.” He hated just sitting back and waiting for someone else to get the information—especially information that could mean helping Sam.

“Come on. We’ll go to the library. Maybe we can find something there.”

“Yeah.” Dean started walking in the direction of the library and Buffy sighed. She didn’t think that they’d be able to find anything at the local library that they couldn’t find in Giles’ books but if it would make Dean feel like he was helping Sam then they’d go to the library.

At least he'd stopped asking about Dawn's skills as a baby-sitter.

The sound of “Witchy Woman” cut through the silence of the library and Buffy rolled her eyes, vowing never to let Dean near her phone again. He smirked and turned the page of his book, nodding at her phone.

She made a face at him. “Hey, Willow,” she said, glancing to be sure the librarian wasn’t watching her. “Anything?”

“Yeah and we’ve got everything needed to turn Sam back except one thing.”

Buffy closed her eyes, ignoring the look Dean was giving her. “Somehow, I’m guessing this isn’t something we’re going to be able to find at the mall.”

“Unless you can get goblin hair from Bath & Body, then no.”

She groaned. “Goblin hair?” Sighing, she sat back, pushing her book away. “Please tell me they sell that in magic shops.”

“Not exactly. We have to actually find a goblin and get some of its hair.”

“Lovely. Meet you back at the house?”

“Sure. I’ll see you guys there.”

“What?” Dean asked as soon as she hung up. “What the hell does goblin hair have to do with this?”

“I’ll tell you on the way back.” Buffy shook her head. “And you’re not going to like it.”
