It was his voice that Veronica noticed first. When he was around her, there was a subtle change in his voice that she wasn’t used to. Words meant to cut were now spoken to caress. The hatred she’d been sure would always be a part of him when it came to her had slowly slipped away.
His voice would go soft when he spoke to her about something important. His mother, Duncan. And then it would go soft there in the bathroom.
He’d sound amused when he spoke to her now and it was new, a switch from the contempt she’d come to expect.
She wasn’t sure what to do about it.
And then she didn’t have to think because her voice was changing too. She laughed more now, small giggles that she’d never thought would come from her again. Her voice would also go soft when talking to him. She whispered in his ear now rather than biting out the words from a safe distance. It’d always been words and tone between them and now was no different.
But their relationship was changing. She could hear it.
