Dean let out a breath and pushed the laptop away from him, glaring at it as if it were the source of all his problems. “We’re getting nowhere with all this research. And what the hell is the point anyway? We already know what we need to do. We just need to do it.”
Buffy looked up from the book she had been flipping through and raised an eyebrow. “Dean, do you know how to find a goblin?”
“Hunt down David Bowie.”
Her lips twitched and she shook her head. “Yeah, me neither. Hence the research.” She sighed. “Not that it’s really been doing much. Who knew figuring out how to find a goblin would be so hard?”
“Yeah.” Dean went back to glaring at the laptop. “What the hell is the internet good for if it can’t even give me some crap answer for me to start looking into? This site sucks.”
She stood up, already reaching for the phone. “That’s it. I think it’s time that we took a little break from researching.”
“Does that mean you’re getting pizza?”
“Do you think of anything besides food?” She held up a hand when Dean smirked. “Don’t answer that.”
“You’d have liked my answer.”
“I’m sure,” Buffy muttered, rolling her eyes. “No, I’m not calling for pizza. I’m calling reinforcements.”
Dean frowned. Willow had already been researching. “You’re calling Xander?” he asked.
“Nope. I’m calling Giles.”
He brightened. “Good. He can do the research and then we can order pizza.”
Buffy snorted. “You have a weird obsession with pizza all of a sudden. What gives?” She paused in pulling up Giles’ number on her cell phone.
“I just want pizza. There’s no crime in that, is there?”
She eyed him for a moment and then crossed her arms. “Yes. Now spill on the real reason.”
He shifted in his seat and flicked his eyes towards the kitchen where Willow, Dawn, and Sam were all sitting. “That was the real reason.”
“You suck at lying, you know that?” Off Dean’s offended look, she shrugged. “Well, you do right now.”
He sighed. “Fine. Sam always wanted to order pizza when we were kids but we couldn’t really afford it that often so most of the time I had to tell him no and distract him with something else. Happy?”
She smiled. “Very. Now let me call Giles while you find out what everyone wants on their pizza and then later we have to go and get Sam some clothes or else the poor kid is going to be running around in the same clothes for who knows how long.”
Dean frowned at the idea and pushed back from the table, heading for the kitchen. He smiled a bit when he heard Buffy tell Giles that they had a small problem.
Inside the kitchen, Sam was talking away. “Dean’s class is putting on a Christmas play this year and his teacher said that everyone has to be a part of it or else they get in lots of trouble and Dean said that I could help him make his costume ‘cause he doesn’t want to have a stupid costume. So we’re going to make a soldier costume and Dean said that maybe Daddy will let us use one of his old shirts for it.”
“Wow,” Dawn said, finally managing to get a word in. “Sounds like you and Dean are going to have fun.”
“Dean and I always have fun.” He paused and then brightened. “Did you know Dean once rescued my bear from the monsters? I thought I lost him to the monsters under the bed and Dean got him back.”
Dean sucked in a breath as he remembered back to when Sam had been four and absolutely terrified that his bear had been kidnapped by the monsters under his bed. Dean had organized a search and rescue and crawled under the bed with a flashlight to get the bear back after double checking with Dad that there really weren’t any monsters under Sam’s bed. He swallowed and remembered the next year when Sam had helped him with his costume. He smiled as he thought of the look on his dad’s face when Sam had insisted the gold buttons off one of his old jackets would be perfect for Dean’s uniform.
Willow looked over and blinked when she saw him. She glanced from him to Sam and then back to him, giving him a knowing smile. He nodded at her and knew that this had to be just as weird for her. Hell, just two days ago she’d been dating Sam and now she was listening to him talk about his bear.
“Hey,” Dean said, moving closer to the table. “Who here likes pizza?”
Sam’s eyes lit up. “Oh! Me!”
“Yeah? It’s a good thing that’s what we’re having for dinner then.” He looked at Dawn and Willow before looking back at Sam. “Who wants what on theirs?” He paused and then pointed at Dawn. “No anchovies.”
“You have no sense of adventure.”
“No, I have taste.”
She made a face at him. “Give me bacon.”
“Bacon. Okay. Sammy?”
Sam bit his lip and made a face that Dean was very familiar with. That face meant that Sam was thinking hard about something he considered important. The fact that it was pizza toppings causing that face was enough to have Dean swallowing a laugh.
Finally, Sam looked up. “I want hamburger.” He paused as if trying to remember something and then smiled. “Please,” he added.
Dean coughed once and nodded. “Got it. Hamburger.”
“And don’t forget the pepperoni,” Willow told him.
“So a meat lover’s it is.”
“Dean?” Sam asked, shifting in his seat.
“Yeah?”
“Can we get coke too?”
Dean blinked as he looked down at Sam’s expression and swore to himself. It was rare that he’d been able to say no to that face. The wide eyes that made Dean think of a small puppy, especially when you added in how hopeful he looked.
“Sure, we can get coke.” He paused and glanced back towards the other room and grinned before turning back to Sam. “And cookie sundaes for dessert.”
Sam’s eyes widened even more as Willow and Dawn both raised their eyebrows. “Does Buffy know about this?” Dawn asked.
“Not yet. She’s getting Giles to help with research.”
Dawn grinned. “Good, that means we have more time to play with Sam.” At that, Sam straightened in his chair and smiled.
“There was also talk of shopping later.” He glanced at Sam and Willow nodded in understanding.
“Have fun with that,” Dawn told him, smirking.
“Who said I was going?” he asked as he headed back in the living room.
Now he just had to figure out a way to convince Buffy of that before they were done with dinner.
